Why Do Cats LOVE Christmas Trees?
The Christmas Tree is positively without a shadow of a doubt CATNIP for FELINES!
What’s the Attraction? Plenty of shiny and dangling things; a cat favorite! It is also a NEW THING that the cat just MUST Investigate! They are so inquisitive! Possibly even the new smells or the smell of the outdoors coming inside — and that is Cat Bliss! Ah! An opportunity to climb which they rarely can resist.
According to PETA, you should try and place your Christmas Tree away from surfaces which can be used as “launching pads” (e.g. end tables). You might even consider anchoring the tree to a wall to prevent tipping over. Put your tree up early so that the cat is already BORED long before the Christmas gatherings.
Other Tips you should consider …
* Don’t use tinsel (it is very shiny and will be temping to chew. But it could get caught in the cat’s intestines.
* Tie ornaments instead of using hooks to hang onto the tree.
* Avoid glass ornaments, real candles, plants, fake snow, and food items like candy canes or chocolate.
* Unplug the lights whenever you cannot be available to supervise the cat!
Although this blog is written mainly to cat owners, be aware that any fury pet can find this new item in the Living Room to be an item worth investigating.
Unfortunately, Christmas Trees aren’t the only festive plant that can cause problems for pets. Poinsettias, holly, mistletoe, and amaryllis are popular holiday plants that can be fatal to cats and dogs if ingested. Keep these plants out of any pet’s reach. Owners who see their pets eat any of these plants should take them to the vet, especially if a pet exhibits signs of gastrointestinal distress.
Enjoy the HOLIDAYS!
