Am I an “Exceptional” or “Ordinary” Realtor?
This month’s July ActiveRain Challenge by John Meussner and Margaret Rome Baltimore 410-530-2400 is to share what makes us stand out amongst our industry peers to show that I am an exceptional REALTOR.
For those who know me, I am not comfortable tooting my own horn, but this is month’s challenge is also an opportunity to share qualities that represent exceptionalism in my field of business — which is Real Estate. So here goes!!!
The world of residential real estate has many different players — appraisers, home inspectors, bankers, loan officers, contractors, stagers, title companies, insurance agents, handymen and even government agencies, as well as Buyers and Sellers! But if the truth be known, the workhorses in a typical real estate transaction is usually the person who coordinates the process – the brokers, real estate agents and REALTORS!
Like a symphony conductor, a good real estate agent coordinates the different players to make a successful transaction a reality. Throughout the process, as the Realtor, I am the salesperson, analyst, business manager, consultant, negotiator, marketer and a buyer’s advocate (just to name a few). I wear many hats!
How can I stand out as an “Exceptional” REALTOR?
Here are some practical tips to achieve and exhibit outstanding qualities and traits as a successful agent (in no particular order):
- Honesty and Integrity
- Self-Motivated Entrepreneur
- Able to Hustle

An Exceptional Realtor looks like the average, everyday person. Really not different from anyone else, yet viewed different from those regarded as just “ordinary.” So what makes one exceptional and others not?
It’s the things we do that make us stand out in a crowd,
cause others to respect us,
and make people want to be around us.
What are those things we do to be Exceptional?
Compliment Others: Every person is amazing in his/her own way and “Exceptional” people have a way of letting others around them know they are valuable and appreciated.
Honesty: At the core of every person with good character is honesty. They do what is right and never cheat or lie to get ahead of the curve. Honesty is what separates the activator from the procrastinator, the dreamer from the doer, and the successful from the non-successful. When it comes to character, we are not what we think … we are not what we say … we are what we do.
Learn from Mistakes: No one is perfect and exceptional people are no exception! We have all taken a wrong turn or made a bad decision. But when ordinary people make a mistake, hit a road block, or come to a fork in the road … they simply give up. Exceptional people STOP and look at their mistake and work on a way to figure out a way to make that negative a positive.
Be a Survivor: Suffering trials and errors in life develops character. Survivors stick, they don’t quit. People of exceptional character don’t quit when times get tough, nor treat others badly when things don’t go our way. We have faith and touch-mindedness to stay in the grind and get things done regardless of the odds.
Have a Higher Purpose: Exceptional people realize they have a higher purpose in life and do things every single day to point them toward achieving their goals. For example: Viktor Frankl, a Holocaust Survivor of 3 years in concentration camps, said that knowing his suffering had meaning is what kept him alive. He knew his life had a purpose and he had to stay alive to serve that purpose. Extraordinary people are better able to overcome obstacles as they focus on their life’s purpose rather than the obstacle in front of them.
Take Action: Exceptional people take action. They don’t sit back and talk and talk and talk some more about ideas or plans. They come up with ideas and then go to work to bring those ideas to life.
Exceptional people are simple, gentle, upfront and direct in the “being” who we are in every situation — in our personal, spiritual and business life. We are content in living a patient life. For us … life is about being authentic “all the time” and following our heart and nothing else!
In Summary
Be Considerate of Others * Remain Humble * Love Life * Never Give Up!
